Novell Netware 5 and Linux

Novell Netware networks are widely deployed in many organizations and maintaining compatibility with these networks is essential for desktop operating systems.

File Server Access

Novel has created the Native File Access Pack which allows systems with different operating systems to access files on  Novell servers. Once the Native File Access Pack is installed and configured on the Novell server, the selected files are available as an NFS share. Since Linux systems are able to mount NFS shares, accessing the files becomes as easy as accessing any other shared Linux file system.

What this means for Xandros Desktop systems that need to access files on a Novell Network server is that once the server is configured and an appropriate mount point is created on your system, you will be able to copy files to and from the server using Xandros File Manager as easily as with any other network file system.

User Management

The Novell Account Management software allows you to manage user accounts from computers with different operating systems including Linux. It works in conjunction with Novell eDirectory which stores the user data. Using this software in conjunction with your Novell servers allows your Linux clients to be authenticated against the user data stored in the Novell eDirectory database. So, if you have Novell servers and are using eDirectory to control access to the network, Linux clients such as Xandros Desktop can be authenticated against the eDirectory.

Network Printer Access

With the introduction of Netware 5, Novell network printing supports the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP). Novell's implementation includes some enhanced functionality which is not currently available to a Linux client (such as a one click install of the relevant printer driver from the Novell server) but IPP printers can be configured using the Xandros Desktop Printer Wizard provided you have the appropriate printer driver and IP address of the printer.
